There are 3 type of estimates that you might get from moving companies.
A true binding not to exceed estimate, a binding estimate and a non-binding estimate. If you are getting quotes online then it’s important that you know the difference between the 3.
The first, a true binding – not to exceed estimate is the most favorable for consumers. It means that you pay only for what you were quote for even if your belongings take up more space or are heavier then was first expected. We recommend that you should ask for this type of quote or moving estimate.
The best type of moving quote is a binding estimate… It’s still not as good as a true binding estimate and it puts extra risk on the consumer. It means that you’re putting trust in the actual estimate which could be completely wrong and end up costing you a fortune. Moving companies can also sneak in extra charges for additional weight, etc.
The last is a non-binding estimate. You would have to be a complete idiot to get a non binding estimate from a moving company… It basically means that you pay up front for the estimated cost and also pay whatever the moving company decides to charge you on top of that amount.
If your move is an interstate move, you should never expect to pay a deposit, and you should never accept an estimate based on cubic feet. Such moving estimates should always be based on weight (as state laws dictate).
