Renting a moving truck is a cost-effective way to relocate a whole household or even a small office. In most states, renting a truck is just like renting a car. The cost of a rental truck is usually dependant on the size of your truck and also the distance you are going to travel. Most rental truck companies (or at least the more popular companies like rental Ryder trucks) have offices in nearly all of the major cities which means that you can take out a one way rental and still be able to transport your articles and belongings nearly anywhere in the continental US.
1. It’s always a good idea to book your moving rental truck early. The most popular companies (and quite often the cheapest) companies sell out more than a week before and it’s not unheard of them to have shortages during popular moving weekends (like in the fall and spring). If your plans change, there generally is no cancellation fee if you provide some minimum amount of notice (usually longer than 24 hours)
2. As always, you should shop around. You can get quotes from many different truck rental companies online. Do it. Since you're just borrowing their equipment (which is all roughly the same), the pricing competition is fierce. Visit any reputable sites to get rental moving truck quote.
When enquiring about the rental prices (to gauge which truck rental company best meets your budget) remember to find out about different types of rental rates as they are often on a per-day basis. Some companies, however, quote higher than others because they have new and well-maintained trucks or offer free unlimited mileage. Other companies might offer standard free mileage plus charges per additional mile. For that reason, it’s a good idea to estimate the number of miles you will need to travel, so that you can have an idea of your total rental expense.
3. Once you’ve decided on a company, it’s always a good idea to call to confirm the day before you move. This might sound like its being overly cautious, but when a moving truck rental booking is misplaced it can really create some headaches on an otherwise perfectly planned moving day. Quite often "Reputable" companies sometimes overbook moving trucks. Call to confirm! (Another small bit of advice, if this has happened to you, you may be able to take the company to small claims court if you have sufficient evidence. Keep receipts, or even book over the Internet so that you have proof of your booking).
4. Another important thing to remember is a roadside service number…. Make sure you get one before you drive away. These trucks are being used constantly and many of them trucks are not maintained well. On more than one occasion, I've had a truck break down on me. Again, not fun on moving day. As always, it’s also important to have your cell phone with you in case you have problems with your moving van or moving truck.
